RANDOLPH, NJ - At Thursday’s meeting, Township Manager Stephen Mountain shared an update on development and tenants in the K-Mart Plaza with the council.

Mountain and Darren Carney, Planning/Zoning Administrator, met with David Steiger of Levco Management to review his plan to replace the facades and signage on the property.

Steiger intends to overhaul the look of the plaza in hopes of attracting new tenants. “It really has a 70s style look to it, in addition to still having the signage associated with former tenants,” Mountain continued. “They feel the market is right, and we will be working closely with him to make sure they have the level of cooperation they need to continue economic development in this important area.”

“Steiger only became involved after mid-2014, which is why we were dealing with a different family representative,” Mountain explained. “His approach is obviously different.  He’s very aggressive, looking to spend a fairly good sum of money to upgrade the look of the plaza even before they have guarantees of tenants coming in.”

He added that the owner will be announcing two new tenants for the former Nutrition Zone and Payless spots and is looking forward to announcing a tenant for the K-Mart space, as well. While they are still finalizing details, Steiger should make an announcement by the end of July.

“He also confirmed that the KMart space will basically be taken down to the ground and then rebuilt, because it’s too far gone to reuse,” Mountain said.

The new facades will be similar to the Noches de Colombia and LA Fitness style, allowing tenants to keep their own identity wile tying into a general theme.

Councilman Jim Loveys asked if a parking lot renovation will be involved with this process, but Mountain responded the parking lot will be the second phase after tenants have been established.

Steiger also plans on replacing the sign for the plaza to provide accurate representation for the tenants.

“In general, I can tell you that the enthusiasm and energy Mr. Steiger has brought into the approach on the plaza has been refreshing,” Mountain said.
