To the Editor:
The Hippocratic Oath, that new physicians attest to when they receive their license to practice medicine, simply states within its text to "do no harm". This promise is one that Americans hold their physicians to as they practice their life/career choice of tending to the physical, mental and emotional state of every person who seeks their care. And if they do not, they can lose their licenses to practice medicine. The American people trust that the "people in charge", hospital administrators, lawyers, elected officials will enforce the laws that are designed to protect the most vulnerable.
I propose that all elected people be required to attest to the same oath "do no harm" when they claim their elected government seat
whether it be school board, municipal, city state or federal seat. This phrase can easily be added when the newly elected person puts their hand on a holy book and swears to uphold our Constitution of the United States. None of the actions being taken these past few day can meet this criteria. None of the proposed actions will meet this criteria.
A ban prohibiting refugees from certain predominately Muslim countries from entering our country damages our American ideals, ideology and history.
Prohibiting EPA scientists from issuing statements to the press damages our First Amendment rights. Repealing actions that will now allow companies to dump toxic waste into our waterways damages our water supplies. Climate change deniers will damage our earth's air, ground, waterways leading to catastrophic events in our future.
Voter suppression, illegal voting restrictions and gerrymandering damages all Americans right to a free democracy.
Planned Parenthood has done more to lessen the number of abortions than all other state government bans by providing family planning information, contraception options and by attending to many other physical, mental and emotional needs of its clients, all on a pay scale. Defunding this very important, vital organization is harmful to the health and well-being of the American people.
Allowing more and more people to purchase and carry firearms wherever they choose can do the utmost harm. Suspending the action to disallow people with mental issues to purchase firearms is sure to lead to more and more deaths.
Repealing sections of the Dodd-Franks banking regulations will allow the bankers who "got away with" the largest monetary crime against the American people to continue their assault on the American public and reap more and more gains. To date, I believe only one single person of lesser importance was jailed for his role in the 2007 contrived banking fiasco
So, I repeat my request. Have all elected officials include in their oath of office to "do no harm".
