MORRISTOWN, NJ -  Maria Scumaci, resident of Morristown, has officially announced her candidacy for the Morristown Council At-Large as a Democrat.

Scumaci graduated from Saint Joseph’s University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2011, acquiring a dual major (in Business Management and International Management) and triple minor (in Economics, Spanish, and Italian).

"The timeline that sculpted my decision to run for Morristown Town Council all started around the year 1715 when this land was first settled", stated Scumaci. "About 60 years after that, George Washington and his wife Martha were headquartered in Jacob Ford’s Mansion, on what we now refer to as Washington Place. About one hundred years later, in 1861, the Murphy family built the house I live in now on Washington Street, near the new Whole Foods. And about one hundred years thereafter, in October of 1966, my grandparents brought our family from our small town in southern Italy to this great town in northern New Jersey: from Magisano to Morristown. At the time, my grandfather had Six Italian Lira in his pocket, the equivalent of Two American Dollars today; so, they were poor on funds but rich in hopes, hard work, and determination. The true American Dream".
"I Owe a lot to those Two Dollars, to my forefathers, and to this amazing community that has been the Gateway to All our victories and Successes throughout the years", she continued. "I’ll be forever indebted to this land, and now it’s my turn to pay it forward".
Scumaci will not be accepting donation for her candidacy. She believes she has the time and resources to run on her own.
"I want to give back to Morristown what it has already given to, and created for, me. All that I am, and all that I know, is product of this great town and the generations of people that created it", stated Scumaci. "It’s my turn to give back everything it has taught me, by working as hard for it, as it has for me."

"My goal is to be a voice to the voiceless, or a vote to those that can’t vote. To Our business owners, homeowners and residents that may not be able to vote, but are some of the highest contributors to municipal revenues. Every person that buys a drink at “George & Martha's”, a shirt at “Century 21”; every single person that flushes a toilet, or washes their hands, contributes to our revenue stream. Those people should be heard. Localization is how we can improve our Town that is already so Great".

The kick-off for the candidacy will take place on Friday, February 17, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at The Office Tavern Grill, 3 South Street, Morristown, NJ 07960.
