MORRISTOWN, NJ - The Mayo Performing Arts Center has received a grant from the Provident Bank Foundation for $15,000 for the Theatre's 2018-2019 Miracle Project Program. The grant will support The Miracle Project, an innovative, evidence-based program that uses theatre and music to help students with autism and other special needs, ages 9-24, overcome their core challenges, stated MPAC.
The 2018-2019 program will consist of five Fall 2018 and five Spring 2019 classes, serving varying ages and independence levels, including the addition of an "Improv for Interaction" class for young adults. Each class serves 6-10 students with autism who are paired with neurotypical teens who volunteer to undergo the program, helping students foster social skills and friendships. As for all classes at MPAC's Performing Arts School, financial aid will be available to students based on need.
"We are grateful to the Provident Bank Foundation for providing needed funding to keep this important program sustainable," said Allison Larena, President and CEO, Mayo Performing Arts Center. "With the rates of autism in New Jersey higher than any other state, inclusive programs like The Miracle Project are vital to help students with special needs unlock their creative potential."
