MORRIS TOWNSHIP, NJ - Replacement of the 118-year-old Mendham Road bridge in Morris Township has been completed on time and re-opened late Tuesday afternoon, allowing traffic to resume without detour on busy Mendham Road (County Route 510) between Morristown and the Mendhams, Chesters and Washington Township.
County engineering officials credited the project contractor, Konkus Corporation of Chester, with overcoming a series of obstacles, including torrential rain over the weekend, to get the replacement work completed by the end of today,
While the physical bridge construction is completed, the contractor still must work over the next few weeks on the stone bridge facing, guide rail, and site restoration work, all of which are part of the $1.62 million county funded job.
Work on the replacing the bridge infrastructure began on Friday and required closing the road and detouring traffic 3.5 miles over the weekend and the first two days of this week.
This project was not affected by the current state impasse cover the Transportation Trust Fund.
“We know this is a very busy road and that closing the bridge was an inconvenience for many drivers,’’ said Freeholder John Cesaro, the county governing board’s liaison on road and bridge issues. “But the work had to be done to ensure safety, and we thank the contractor for working hard to ensure it was done quickly.’’
The original Mendham Road Bridge, which accommodated about 17,000 per day, was built in 1898 and was widened in 1950. It was a single span structure with steel stringers and a reinforced arch deck with masonry stone substructures.
The old structure was 13-feet long and 49-feet wide. It had to be replaced due to severe rust and section loss of the steel stringers, with cracks throughout the asphalt roadway and an undermining of the foundations.
The new structure will be a precast concrete arch. The bridge parapets will be stone faced with a bluestone coping and also the substructure will be stone faced. The roadway curb-to-curb width will be approximately 46 feet and the overall structure width will be 49 feet.
