ROXBURY, NJ – Supported by Roxbury emergency services crews and state police, three teens swam seven miles across Lake Hopatcong on Friday as a fundraiser for a former Roxbury High School student recovering from a brain tumor operation.

Blessed with beautiful weather, Tyler McDonald, 15, Justin Viotto, 15 and Jamie Viotto, 18, swam south from Flash Watersports & Marina to Lake’s End Marina. They did so to draw attention to the needs of Emerline Tabares, a former Roxbury cheerleader and lacrosse player who recently underwent removal of a brain tumor. The young men hoped people would support them by donating money to a GoFundMe site.

As of mid-day today, 34 people had donated more than $2,300 through the site, created by McDonald’s father, Darren McDonald.

Roxbury Fire and First Aid Company #2 helped the swimmers and praised their effort on its Facebook page, saying its members were “honored to partake in such an awesome event … it was for a great cause.”
