MORRISTOWN, NJ -  For the 2nd consecutive year, Morristown High School is participating in the New York Jets “Upstander of the Week” Program.  In order to be chosen, students must encourage positive dialogue among their peers and work to ensure that all students are respected and valued as members of the MHS community,

This week, Ava Downs has been selected as the New York Jets Upstander of the Week. According to the school, "Ava joined the Morris Minutemen, a volunteer ambulance corporation, where she helps others who suffer from various injuries.  She is a member of FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) and helps raise money for the club. She joined the local fire department and gets the equipment ready for the firefighters.  She also babysits children, several times a month, at Homeless Solutions, a nearby shelter. According to her Guidance Counselor, she “thrives on helping others,” and “takes pride in everything that she does.”  Finally, she was described as “having strong principals and morals that guide her in her everyday actions!”

For each of 16 weeks during the 2018 NFL season, staff members will nominate students who demonstrate upstanding qualities of character similar to the Heart of the Colonial (i.e. kind, hard-working, responsible, honest, and respectful). One student will be selected each week and he/she will be honored with a special T-shirt, parent bumper sticker, 3 tickets to a home NY Jets game, and a parking pass.

"This program affords us the opportunity to highlight the positive contributions so many of our students make to our school and to our community", said Morristown High School Principal Mark Manning.  "I want to extend my appreciation to the Jets organization for their willingness to partner with us to recognize some of our amazing students at MHS".

Schools who fully participate in the program may receive a visit by New York Jets players. Last year, Morristown High School was a finalist during the 2017 season

Through the outreach program, the New York Jets have directly reached 9,000 students through school visits, distributed over 1,250 Educator Toolkits with the potential to impact more than 430,000 students, and they have donated more than $200,000 to Stomp Out Bullying during their Anti-Bullying Awareness Gamedays at Met Life Stadium.
