MORRISTOWN, NJ - This holiday season, Charlie Lia, a senior at Morristown High School is collecting new, unwrapped toys and books for the pediatric unit at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. Lia is hoping that these donated toys and books will bring a smiles to the children who are in the hospital during the holidays. Wesley's Toy Box, which Lia started three years ago, honors Lia's pediatrician, Dr. Wesley Boodish of Millburn Pediatrics, who passed away in 2014.
"I started this toy drive so I could show appreciation to the hospital that saved my life and commemorate my late pediatrician, Dr. Wesley Boodish," said Lia. "I remember how distressing being a hospital patient was, especially during the holiday season."
So far this year, Lia has collected 100 toys for the children. He is reaching out to the community in hopes of collecting 300 toys and books. Lia's friends and classmates at Morristown High School help spread the word through social media and students at Morristown High School can receive one hour of community service for each toy they donate. Members of the community can make a donation of a new unwrapped toy or book by December 22, 2016 to Morristown High School Attention Key Club, 50 Early Street Morristown; Millburn Pediatrics; 159 Millburn Avenue, Millburn or Morgan Stanley, 10 Madison Avenue 1st Floor, Morristown
"Saint Barnabas has many patients in their pediatric unit; some are hospitalized, others are part of their outpatient program", said Lia. "My ultimate goal is to deliver as many toys as possible to bring cheer to the kids who are ill during the holiday season".
