MORRISTOWN, NJ - Madeline Zurcher, a senior at Morristown High School, has been awarded the Y Zone Youth Annex First Annual Scholarship presented by the Greater Morristown YMCA.

Each year, a high school senior will be selected to receive a one-time $500 scholarship and four-year Teen or Young Adult Membership to the Greater Morristown YMCA. Eligible high school seniors must have attended Backyard Kids Camp, Richard F. Blake Children’s Center, Little Owls or the Greater Morristown YMCA/Morris Center YMCA After Care program.

A committee comprised of Y leadership selected  Zurcher as the inaugural recipient of the scholarship based on her application essay. She attended Y’s Owls and Backyard Kids summer camps as well as the after school program.

Zurcher's essay focused on the life lessons she learned in camp – the value of acceptance, diversity and individuality and credits camp as the start of her maturation and growth as a person.

“I will be forever grateful for the friends, the counselors and even the ninety-degree summer weather because it led to the greatest friendships, memories and lessons that I will ever know,” she acknowledged in her essay. Zurcher will attend the College of New Jersey in the fall.

Carol Armour, CEO of the Greater Morristown YMCA, said “The newly instituted scholarship program honors the Y-Zones’ dedication to Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility, which are the Y’s areas of focus.”

The Y-Zone Youth Annex is Greater Morristown YMCA’s brand new 6,000 square foot facility nestled on a 3-acre cul-de-sac with sports fields, basketball court, ropes course and more. Backyard Kids Day Camp is now held at the Y Zone, where children can enjoy plenty of outdoor space and fun activities.

“Middle school children will thrive at the Y Zone as they engage in sports activities, participate in team building, or just chill with friends after a structured day,” concluded Ms. Armour.
