MORRISTOWN, NJ - The cast and crew of Legally Blonde the Musical performed to a sold out crowd on the closing night of their spring production. Directed by high school teacher Michael McGuire, this high energy, fast paced show starring Anna Skelton as Elle Woods follows the story based on a novel by Amanda Brown and the popular 2001 movie starring Reese Witherspoon.
Elle is a sorority girl who ditches her pampered life in Malibu to enroll in Harvard Law School in order to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner (Hugh Grennan). Although most of her classmates and professors doubt her intelligence, she proves them wrong when she successfully defends her first murder trial.
“It’s just great to see a different play rather than the same traditional plays that were performed when I was a kid,” said David Matalon, Morristown resident and owner of Morristown Animal hospital.
He and his business have been very involved with many fundraisers and events at the high school especially now that his daughter Marina is a senior. Both raved about the performance and were glad they could attend.
While most of the details of the original story remained the same, a few changes were required in order to transform the book into a musical. Throughout the play, we see Elle’s sorority sisters (Kate Croonquist, Fiona Keefe and Aja Baitey) who appear in her subconscious as a type of “Greek Chorus” to help guide her. However, most of the same characters who audience members fell in love with over a decade ago such as Paulette Bonafonte (Victoria Fanning) and Emmett Forrest (Nile Birches) remained true to their original role.
Morristown High School Cheerleading Squad also made an appearance in a few scenes. Tina Jones, whose daughter is on the squad attended the show for the second time on closing night.
“It was just so great, they did such a great job. This was the first production I saw at the high school and I was really impressed.” she said.
