MORRISTOWN, NJ - Cole Porter’s classic musical—Anything Goes—opens at Morristown High School on March 8th. With only ten weeks to get the show performance ready, the entire cast, crew, and directing team are working diligently under a tighter time crunch than usual.
This timeless show tells the story of a love triangle between Reno Sweeney (Victoria Fanning), Billy Crocker (Hugh Grennan) and Hope Harcourt (Anna Skelton), who is engaged to be married to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (Greg Mehlin). The musical features the hilarious criminal, Moonface Martin (Nile Birch) and his sidekick and girlfriend, Erma (Kate Croonquist).
What’s more, the entire show takes place on a cruise ship, the S.S American!
The magnitude of this show has certainly been a challenge for the students, but arguably one of the most impressive aspects of the musical is the dancing. Unlike last year’s musical, Legally Blonde, Anything Goes incorporates classic 1930s jazz and swing numbers such as “Blow Gabriel Blow,” elegant ballroom dancing in “ It’s De-Lovely,” tap dancing in the title number “Anything Goes” and even tango in “Gypsy in Me.”
“My favorite parts of the show are the big group dance numbers,” says Artistic Director, Michael Maguire. “They include the whole cast and are extremely high-energy and what the show is famous for, especially the number “Anything Goes” which is a full-cast tap number. That’s a big deal for a large group of kids, especially one of which a large percentage have never tapped before this show!”
The cast rehearses up to twelve hours every week just on the dancing alone. Choreographer and high school teacher, Chelsea Gower runs dance rehearsals every Friday evening and drills full-cast numbers in order to perfect them. Dance Captains, Michelle Bertram ‘19 and Sean Armington ‘18 run additional dance reviews every Saturday morning to ensure that the cast is performance ready.
“The dancing in this show is unlike anything else,” says Bertram.”It’s full of character which every person clearly exhibits, it makes the show come to life!”
The show runs for four performances only! March 8th, 9th, and 10th at 7pm and March 11th at 2pm. This show is not one to miss! “Come see the show and leave smiling, humming, and tapping your feet!”
