MORRISTOWN – Wrestling season at Morristown High will extend another week.
Head coach Casey Flynn has produced two region qualifiers in his first year directing the Colonials, as Aidan Watson (145) and Liam Carragher (195) booked their places to next weekend’s Region 3 tournament at West Orange in Saturday's District 11 wrestling tournament at MHS.
Watson – who is now 22-7 in his freshman season – made it all the way to the finals in his class, but had to settle for second when he was pinned by West Morris senior Justin LeMay in 28 seconds.
Carragher, now 14-15 on his campaign, won his third-place match vs. Belvidere’s Ryan Kokawski by default.
Morristown – in finishing 5th out of nine in the team race with 77 points – could have had five more grapplers move onto next weekend, but all of them dropped their third-place matches.
Eric Jackson (132), Ryan Jackson (160), Junior Sanchez (220), and Jordan Amaya (HWT) were all pinned in their do-or-die matches to come up a win short of making regions.
Luke Tappen – a junior who wound up with a fine 17-12 season – was stuck in a loaded bracket as the sixth seed in the 145-pound bracket, but knocked off 22-6 Paul LePera of Morris Catholic to make the semis. After losing to West Morris’ A.J. Hill in that round, Tappen was majored by Kearny’s Arthur Smith, 8-0, in the third-place match.
Hanover Park – who defeated West Morris head to head in six title matches – bested out the Wolfpack, 248 to 236.5 to take home the team title.
