MORRISTOWN, NJ - On Wednesday, March 14, the Women’s March Youth EMPOWER is organizing a National School Walkout. According to the national march website, the walkout is for 17 minutes at 10 a.m. "to protest Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods... and to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship."

Students at Morristown High School and Frelinghuysen Middle School have planned to join the movement, which honors the 17 victims who tragically lost their lives in the parkland Florida school shooting. The "walk out" at MHS is student led and organized and has been approved by MHS and FMS administration.

"Students will be permitted to leave class and silently line the halls of the school", said MHS Principal Mark Manning. "An announcement will be made in honor of the victims and then students will return to class."

Although students are permitted to participate and "walk out" of their class at the designated time, no student is allowed to leave the building, said Manning.

In a letter to parents Manning outlined the plans for the day reinforcing that "the plan provides students with the opportunity to engage in a non-political act of solidarity in a manner that ensures the highest level of student safety. There will be no disciplinary consequences for students who adhere to the guidelines set forth by the school, he wrote.

"I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to work with our student leaders to create a plan that provides students with an opportunity to engage in a non-political act of solidarity while ensuring student safety", said Manning.  "I want to applaud our student leaders for their maturity, realistic attitudes and their cooperation".
