CHATHAM, NJ --At this point in the season, the chief goal for the Morristown High baseball team is to win the NJAC-United Division title.
The Colonials have taken another step toward clinching a share of the crown.
After dispatching Chatham, 7-1, on Monday afternoon, Morristown improved to 12-4 on the overall season and 6-1 in the United Division. The victory sets up a massive game with Mendham on Wednesday, where the Colonials will win at least 1/2 of the title with a "W". If they should lose, however, they will likely finish second in the race and concede the whole conference pie to Delbarton.
Sophomore Brennan O'Neill had another fine outing for Morristown, picking up the win by only surrendering four hits in a complete game effort on the mound. O'Neill struck out 9 Cougars in this game.
Matt Nodoro got the scoring started for Morristown by scoring Chase Champi in the top of the first. In the next Morristown frame, Champi would drive in a pair of Colonials himself to balloon the lead to 3-0.
O'Neill added a RBI on a squeeze bunt in the fifth, and Tate Ballestero closed the scoring by making the bold decision to steal home plate, which he did successfully.
Jake Bevich was 1-3 with a double and 1 RBI for Chatham.
The Colonials will face Mendham at the Somerset Patriots Stadium on Wednesday May 11. First pitch will be thrown at 7pm.
