MORRIS PLAINS, NJ - Residents in the Morris Plains area should be aware that a controlled open burn will be taking place today near the Central Park of Morris County. Smoke may be visible in the area, said police. There will be trail closures in these areas.

The prescribed burning program – which reduces wildfire risks by burning away the buildup of undergrowth, fallen trees and branches, leaves, pine needles and other debris on forest floors, advised The New Jersey State Forest Fire Service.

These burns are generally conducted during the winter – especially toward the late-winter months – to minimize the amount of smoke produced, and when weather conditions tend to be safer for controlled fires.
