Susan G. Komen North Jersey Increases Program Funding by 15% for 2018-2019

and Awards 13 Grants to 11 Local Community Non-Profit Organizations

June 21, 2018  – Susan G. Komen North Jersey announced that it will award a total of 13 grants to 11 local community non-profit organizations in its nine-county service area for 2018-2019, with an increase in total program funding at 15% year over year. Since its founding in 1997, Komen North Jersey has awarded nearly $19 million to local community programs in nine North Jersey counties and has directed more than $7 million to national research initiatives in pursuit of new breast cancer screening techniques, better and more effective treatment options, and ultimately, the causes and cures to eradicate breast cancer forever.

Komen North Jersey’s local mission is focused on providing access to those who need it most—uninsured and medically-underserved women and men in our neighborhoods—by funding grants to support programs that provide critical services at a grassroots level. These include Patient Navigators who guide breast cancer patients through the arduous (and often complicated) journey of diagnosis and treatment; financial assistance for basic necessities while patients are undergoing what often is a debilitating course of treatment; and breast health/breast cancer education and access to life-saving breast health services for minority populations and communities considered most “at risk.”

In addition, this year, Komen has set aside $10,000 to fund a special grant devoted to providing support to breast cancer survivors. According to Komen North Jersey sources, the Affiliate has more than tripled its grant funding since 2014. “We are very proud that Komen North Jersey is able to fund so many important programs that are helping the women and men in our community who need us most,” says Tina Jacobs, the Affiliate’s Director of Community Health. “We are grateful for the amazing generosity of our supporters, which enabled us to increase our funding again this year. We know this will translate to more lives saved and more impact in our communities. Until a cure is found, we’ll be here, working hard to raise money to support as many of these community programs as we possibly can.”

In order to ensure it is funding programs addressing the specific unmet breast cancer needs of the North Jersey community, Komen North Jersey works with local health care professionals and community leaders to conduct a comprehensive community needs assessment every five years. This Community Profile, a required practice of all Komen Affiliates, is then used to establish a local grant application and review process consistent with the organization’s standards and mission. Funding is restricted in that it may only be used to provide the vital breast health services indicated in each grantee’s program application. Funds must be strictly tracked and may never be mixed with an organization’s general operating funds.

In 2016, Susan G. Komen set its sights on a BOLD goal to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50% in the US by 2026 (40,000 women and men are expected to die from the disease this year). They will achieve this by focusing on ensuring that everyone—especially the most vulnerable among us—has access to and utilizes high-quality breast cancer care. And they have committed to invest more money into research targeted at the most lethal and aggressive forms of the disease (Komen directed nearly half of ALL 2017 new research project funding to metastatic research).

The Komen North Jersey Affiliate is just one of a worldwide network of passionate local Susan G. Komen Affiliates committed to easing the suffering of those diagnosed with the disease, and who work diligently to do everything they can to end breast cancer forever. Komen has transformed how the world treats and talks about this disease and has helped turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors. From 1989-2015, deaths from breast cancer declined by 39 percent. Almost every major breast cancer research breakthrough has been partially funded by Komen—including the recently-announced breakthrough study that some women with early stage breast cancer may be able to avoid chemotherapy. The organization is the largest non-profit funder of breast cancer research in the world second only to the U.S. government.

The 2018-2019 Komen North Jersey Grantee organizations include: Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, Breast Cancer Emergency Aid Foundation, Cancer Care, Clara Maas Medical Center, Englewood Medical Center, Hoboken Family Planning, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Northwest Jersey Community Action Partnership, Inc., Overlook Medical Center,  Somerset Health Care Foundation and Trinitas Regional Medical Center.
