MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY -- The Town of Morristown and the Morristown Shade Tree Commission are pleased to have received a donation of $3,000 from The Hampshire Companies, LLC, a Morristown-based real estate firm. The donation has funded the planting of five new trees along South Street, as part of the Business District Tree Rejuvenation Project. The project, which was developed by the Shade Tree Commission in coordination with the Morristown Department of Public Works and the Morristown Partnership, aims to improve the health of existing trees, remove dead trees and replant new, sustainable tree species throughout downtown Morristown.

“The Morristown Shade Tree Commission is thrilled to have such a significant donation from Hampshire Companies to improve our urban forest,” added Shade Tree Commission Chairperson Kristin Ace. “It shows our community how important our trees truly are for a thriving business district.”

“At the Hampshire Companies, we take pride in the many corporate sustainability initiatives we have undertaken,” said Hampshire Companies EVP and Fund Manager Rob Schmitt, “In this regard we were thrilled to make an economic contribution to the Morristown Shade Tree Commission to plant new trees.”

The Hampshire Companies is a privately held, fully integrated real estate firm and real estate investment fund manager whose headquarters are in Morristown. Hampshire has over 60 years of hands-on experience in acquiring, developing, leasing, repositioning, managing, financing and disposing of real estate.

The Shade Tree Commission began the Business District Tree Rejuvenation Project in 2016 to ensure the health, well-being and longevity of Morristown’s street trees.  As part of the project, over 300 tree wells will be amended in 2018 and 2019.  In the upcoming months, tree wells along South and Washington Streets will be aerated to dislodge compacted soil. The same treatment will take place on Park Place, Morris Avenue, Elm Street and Speedwell Avenue as the project continues.  Dead or dying trees will also be removed as part of the project, and new trees will be added, including those generously donated by The Hampshire Companies.

A donor plaque has been placed on display at Morristown Town Hall to acknowledge all of the companies and organizations who have donated funds towards planting new trees in town.
