MORRISTOWN, NJ - Lego Robotics, chorus, drama, track, boys’ basketball, girls’ volleyball, Technovationⓒ, genius bar, Girls On The Runⓒ...these are just a few of the options Unity Charter School students have once the school day ends.  In the past two years, Unity Charter School has expanded their extracurricular and enrichment programs in order to support and promote 21st century skills.  These skills include collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity.  According to the National Center for Education Statistics, extracurricular participation, along with consistent attendance, academic achievement, and aspirations for continuing education beyond high school, was positively associated with academic success beyond high school.

“What we have noticed as we have expanded our extracurricular and enrichment programs is that our students are even more connected to the school.  Friendships form effortlessly, as students branch out and make friends outside of their immediate social circle.  For our coaches, who are all teachers, it fortifies their bonds outside the classroom,” said Executive Director Connie Sanchez.

“I coach because it provides a unique opportunity to connect with students in a non-academic setting. By stepping outside of the classroom, I've gotten to learn so much more about my students personalities and strengths. Coaching gives me a platform separate from the classroom to guide, encourage and support my students. It's really exciting and fun to watch them build up confidence and try something new,” said Lindsey Daly, girls’ volleyball coach and middle school social studies teacher.
