Middle school students, Julia and Sydney, of Unity Charter School are selected as winners of the Mahatma Ghandi Art & Writing Contest. This year, the Association of Indians in America (AIA) celebrated the 15th Anniversary of the Mahatma Gandhi contest. Over their 15 years, several thousand students from middle and high schools have participated in the competition and the AIA has recognized hundreds of them for their outstanding work in interpreting and expressing Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas to make us better citizens and our world a better place to live. AIA is one of the oldest associations representing Indian-Americans in the United States. It is a not for profit organization committed in spreading Gandhi’s message of peace, non-violence and racial harmony.
This year, once again, the Mahatma Gandhi Art & Writing Contest organizers, invited all New Jersey middle and high school students to submit their original work, written or art, based on the following quote: “The future depends on what we do in the present.” Both Julia and Sydney’s submissions exemplified Mahatma Ghandi’s life and the meaning of the quote. Their work was selected from thousands of submissions. Both students will be recognized at Princeton University next month.
