MORRISTOWN, NJ - Today, members of Unity Charter School’s National Junior Honor Society traveled to Connecticut to take part in a National Junior Honor Society state summit.  While there, they will be able to work with other students from the Tri-State area. The summit is an opportunity for students to participate in a simulated hearing to develop a legislative proposal that addresses a public issue, and share it with an appropriate legislative body.  They’ll learn how to better articulate the rights and responsibilities of democratic participation and leadership, in both local and global contexts.  Throughout the day students will also develop their sense of efficacy by using their legitimate voice to demonstrate advocacy skills.

As part of the summit, students attend various workshops and participate in student caucuses. They tackle state-based issues, attend workshops that appeal to their specific leadership interests, and listen to various prominent speakers. They also network with like minded peers and learn about topics that include:

  • Global Citizenship
  • Improving Learning Environments
  • Wellness and Mindfulness
  • Effective & Persuasive Communication
  • Creativity & Innovation
  • Social Justice & Community Engagement
  • Digital & Social Media
  • Project & Team Management
  • Improving School Climate & Culture.

By the conclusion of the day students will understand that what they do can have a positive or negative effect on their environment.  They will know that their actions can work towards helping to better society.
