MORRISTOWN, NJ – Morristown High School’s Kevin Sandoval has advanced to the NJSIAA Region 3 tournament after placing third in the 220-pound weight class of Saturday’s NJSIAA District 11 tournament.

After losing in the semifinals to eventual bracket winner Keyon Means-Bowm (Queen of Peace), Sandoval took third by defeating Belvidere’s Hunter Smith in overtime, 11-9.

The third place finish secures Sandoval’s spot in West Orange next weekend.

195-pounder Liam Carragher was the only other Morristown grappler to finish in the top 4. He just missed a third place finish by falling to Morris Catholic’s Devonne Swan at the 3:03 mark of the match.

This will be the first region appearance for Sandoval.

As a team, Morristown finished eighth. Queen of Peace edged Hanover Park for the district title.
