To the Editor,
There is only one short-term solution that can help protect our children right now. There needs to be a police officer in every school, every day from now on and in perpetuity.
In a perfect world, it would be nice to imagine that there were no private homes that housed military level assault weapons, but that is not short-term reality. It would also be nice if we could come up with a short-term solution that provided help and hope for mental illness, depression, over-prescribed meds...but that is also not a short-term reality.
What can help today is if our schools created a small area for a police officer to work out of, onsite, that exuded a police presence every day. I'm sure this police presence would have a positive impact on other issues as well.
What do we need to do to make this happen?
