MORRISTOWN, NJ - Community members are invited to an opening reception for “Hineni (Here I Am),” an exhibition of recent works by Susan Roth.

The exhibit, which will run through April 12, will be held on Sunday, February 2, 2020 from 1 pm to 3 pm at The Linda Grandis Blatt Gallery of Temple B’nai Or, 60 Overlook Road, Morristown.

Roth paints in her studio in Morristown and at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit, according to organizers.  She studied for 15 years at the Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster and credits her teacher there for encouraging her to observe 80% of the time and paint 20%, a variation on a recurring theme in her work as a psychologist, where she listens 80% of the time and speaks 20%, they said.  Her training as a psychologist shows in her artwork, with its strong expression of emotion and structure in the color, line, and subject of her work.

Fifteen years ago, at the Clarence Dillon Public Library in Bedminster, her one-woman show “Pocketbooks as Art” presented fifty pocketbooks made from cigar boxes, accompanied by an explanatory history of cigar box labels.  Most recently, her show “Never Judge a Woman by the Size of Her Portrait” at the Bernards Township Library in Basking Ridge, included 50 portraits of women, most of them two inches square, each on its own easel.  The larger portraits in the collection were collages with the strong colors and graphic qualities she replicates in her “travel jewelry” collection, collage necklaces made of foam, which Roth describes as “light in weight and monetary value, and not likely to be stolen.”

The artist’s work can be found in private collections in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, as well as internationally in Canada, England, France, and Israel.  Her wide range of subjects and styles reflects her varied interests in people and places.  She has traveled worldwide, most recently painting in France.

Gallery hours are during Temple B’nai Or functions and by appointment during business hours, Monday through Friday.  Please call or text (973) 532-2268 or email to arrange a private viewing.

Temple B’nai Or is a Reform Jewish congregation and a welcoming, diverse and caring community. A portion of the purchase price of all works sold benefits the Temple.
