RANDOLPH, NJ- iCan Bike, a camp to teach individuals with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle, is coming to County College of Morris in the summer of 2018. CCM is generously providing the use of their gymnasium for the iCan Bike organizers to run their program in.
The camp, which will be held August 6-10, is one of several programs run under the auspices of iCan Shine, an international charitable nonprofit 501 (C) (3) organization. Marty’s Reliable Cycle and AAA are also involved in bringing this camp to Morris County.
Diane Doherty and Judy Lauber will be organizing and hosting iCan Bike-Randolph after having volunteered at another camp last summer. “It was a challenging and rewarding experience for everyone”, one volunteer said. “It was a great feeling to see the kids become independent and to know that I helped make that happen”.
For the campers, it improved self-esteem, confidence and physical fitness. Biking has the potential for being a family activity since everyone can ride together, while also proving to be a monumental accomplishment for some.
The iCan Bike camp consists of five 75 minute sessions per day. Each session will have a maximum of eight bikers and will be managed by an instructor and bike specialist from iCan Shine. Riders will attend one session each day for 5 days.
Tuesday during the camp week will be called “Tandem Tuesday” and each rider will have the opportunity to ride on a tandem bicycle with the instructor. The riders will have 2-3 “spotters” (volunteers) to encourage them and provide physical support if needed while riding. They will start with a special adaptable bicycle and graduate to their own bicycle by the end of the week.
Diane and Judy were so taken with iCan Bike camp week that they spoke to the director about bringing the iCan Bike camp to another area of NJ in need of such a program. As a result of their conversation, they decided to start a camp in Morris County.
