MORRISTOWN, NJ -  For the 3rd consecutive year, Morristown High School is participating in the New York Jets “Upstander of the Week” Program.  In order to be chosen, students must encourage positive dialogue among their peers and work to ensure that all students are respected and valued as members of the MHS community,

This week, Jackelyn Olarte was selected as the NY Jets Upstander of the Week.

According to Sophomore Class Advisor, Susan Mele, Jackelyn has been a Class Representative for the past 2 years.  She “demonstrates a great deal of enthusiasm and dedication in fundraising for the Sophomore Class.” She “goes above and beyond what is expected and sold 15.5 boxes of chocolate when only 4 were required.”  Teacher Tracy Bisulca described her as a “great candidate” for the Upstander Program. She stated that “Jackie was kind, respectful, and very responsible.” She “works well with whomever she is assigned to as her partner for labs and activities” and she “tries to teach others by helping them to understand.”  Teacher Elizabeth Ostendorp claimed that she was “such a good student and person” and that she was “willing to befriend anyone.” In addition, she “helps ALL the kids in class.” Additional teachers mentioned that she “had a positive attitude, that she was a model student, and that she was amazing!”

For each of 16 weeks during the 2018 NFL season, staff members will nominate students who demonstrate upstanding qualities of character similar to the Heart of the Colonial (i.e. kind, hard-working, responsible, honest, and respectful). One student will be selected each week, and he/she will be honored with a special T-shirt, and 2 tickets to a home NY Jets game.

"This program affords us the opportunity to highlight the positive contributions so many of our students make to our school and to our community", said Morristown High School Principal Mark Manning.  "I want to extend my appreciation to the Jets organization for their willingness to partner with us to recognize some of our amazing students at MHS".

Full participation in the program may lead to a School Recognition Visit by New York Jets players. Morristown High School was a finalist in 2017 and 2018 and school officials are hoping that 2019 will be their year.

“I am honored to implement this tremendous program and to recognize students who demonstrate positive behavior", said Mele.  "The New York Jets do a great deal for our community. They really do care!”
