Middle schoolers at Unity Charter School have been selected to take part in a “Think Tank” with students committed to researching and solving environmental problems.  The program encourages participants from diverse backgrounds to find common denominators in solving problems, and to promote an awareness of the natural environment and the cleanliness ethic. 

The environmental journey will be the culmination of a 6-month project that includes multi-media presentations, project boards, and/or environmental works of art.

The students taking part in the exchange are students who completed their Personal Learning Plan (PLP) with related content.  At Unity, PLPs are developed jointly as a partnership between student and teacher in order to identify a student’s academic strengths and areas of focus, multiple intelligences, interests and abilities. Strategies are planned to enhance or help to improve their academic and non-academic growth and development.  The goal of PLP is to have students develop their meta cognitive skills by encouraging them to think about their thinking.  During their time:

  • Students will take part in a 2-day workshop.
  • Teacher coaches will work with students to develop Units of Study.
  • Each participating school will submit at least 2 topics for exploration. 
  • Coaches and students track their environmental journey with photos, comments, challenges and solution ideas on social media outlets.
  • The goal is to produce meaningful, research and evidence-based discussions and viable environmental solution ideas related to Units of Study.
