MORRISTOWN, NJ - An education at Unity Charter School means going beyond basic student achievement.  In fact, the definition of Student Achievement goes beyond traditional. The school believes in educating the whole child to create confident, capable, lifelong “Unity Learners” who make a positive difference in the world and to other people.

One way the school does this is by inviting commUNITY professionals who share their stories about their road to success and how they create happiness. On Tuesday, the school welcomed Top Chef contestant and Executive Chef at Heirloom kitchen David Viana to speak with their middle school students.

Growing up with Portuguese parents, David Viana fostered a love of food at an early age and remembers helping his family in the kitchen cook for his relatives that would come over every Sunday. After attending the Institute of Culinary Education, and working for Bobby Flay, Anthony Bucco, and Michael White, Chef David sharpened his skills in world-class kitchens including Eleven Madison Park and Two Star Michelin restaurant Villa Joya in Portugal. He received distinguished recognition as the Executive Chef at The Kitchen at Grove Station, receiving three stars from the New York Times who described his dishes as “magical” and “hypnotizing.” At Heirloom Kitchen, David continues to impress, receiving three-and-a-half stars from The Star-Ledger within weeks of the restaurant's opening. He was also nominated in 2018 for a James Beard Award—Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic.

The stage was turned into “The Unity Chew” for an interactive conversation between the chef and the students. David shared how after graduating college and securing a job as a probation officer he just wasn’t fulfilled.  He realized he found happiness when he was cooking.  Throughout the afternoon David also spoke with students about how food is a cultural bridge for people, about the role of food science in recipes, his preferred foods and his favorite banana recipe.
