MORRISTOWN, NJ – On September 16, Senior Scouts, Kat Niatas, Rachel Niatas, Nya Federoff and Jessica Vogel, all of Morristown Troop 1170, completed their "Girltopia Journey" with a successful take action project. The "Girltopia Journey" asks the girls to imagine a perfect world and to recognize what they can do to make their vision a reality. Through the journey, the girls explore information and topics related to improving the world around them.
Reflecting on how to positively make a difference for women in the community, the troop decided to that a service project that benefited the Battered Women's Service was how they wanted to make a difference.
"The girls wanted to help other women", said Troop Leader Mary Ellen Niatas. "The girls looked at the wish site for the Battered Women's Shelter and saw that they needed items for the kids at the shelter to start school. We came up with a list of items, made up a flyer and stood outside of the Kings in Morristown. Customers were invited to purchase items off our wish list or they were able to donate money directly to our cause".
Through the generosity of the customers, the troop collected $600 and 25 bags of groceries. The money was used to purchase $25 gift cards from Walmart so that the families could purchase what they needed.
"The project allowed the girls to make a difference while getting in touch with the community", said Niatas.
