Middle school students at Unity Charter School were paid a special visit on Tuesday, October 22nd as a part of their 21st Century Skills guest speaker programming. Environmental Planner Kimberly Meersma gave the students a special presentation on the sustainable path she has chosen for her professional life. Meersma has built an impressive resume with work experience at the United States Department of Agriculture, the White House Council on Environmental Quality and MIT.
Kim’s background includes conducting environmental research, outreach initiatives and providing education on sustainability. She has a strong interest in environmental justice, current policy issues and resource management. Kim received a degree in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Environmental Politics, Policy, and Economics from Mount Holyoke College.
After discussing her passion for sustainability, her work as an Environmental Planner and the importance of following your curiosity, she opened the floor up to students for a Question & Answer Session. As always, the inquisitive students of Unity asked thoughtful questions and engaged in meaningful dialogue with Meersma.
“What’s the scale of the projects that you plan?” - Nina Lawson, 7th grade
“Do you study the geosphere, atmosphere and biosphere?” - Daniel Francis, 5th grade
“What would be different if the career of environmental planner didn’t exist?”- Lucia M., 6th grade
“Do you partner with other organizations?” - Abbie Matlosz, 7th grade
“How many projects do you work on per year?” - Brendan Ma, 5th grade
Meersma will be partnering with Unity for upcoming sustainable initiatives and has offered to assist students with their Education for Sustainability projects throughout the school year. Unity looks forward to building a relationship with someone who is as mission-minded and accomplished as Kimberly! She will be an excellent resource for our students and teachers.
