MILLBURN, NJ - Spending time fishing with your family can create special memories, encourage communication and for five New Jersey residents, add a little extra money to your pocket.
Morris Plains resident Stephanie Osborne was among the five winners of this year's Don't Get Hooked on Drugs Online NJ Family Fishing Contest. Osborne as well as fellow winners Carl Cocozza (of Egg Harbor), Vince Miranda (of Mays Landing), Tim McHugh (of Sewell) and Mike Mezak (of Midland Park) all received a $100 gift card after being named this year's winners.
The fifth annual contest, sponsored by the Partnership For a Drug Free New Jersey, encouraged families to head outdoors and spend the day fishing. There were 23 submissions for this year's contest, which ran from July 19 to July 28.
“The Don't Get Hooked on Drugs Online NJ Family Fishing Tournament gave families the perfect opportunity to initiate conversation and bond together over some summertime fun,” PDFNJ Executive Director Angelo Valente said.
According to research conducted by the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey, it is crucial for parents to frequently interact and communicate with their kids. The organization found that such discussions can be a helpful in substance use prevention. Their statistics showed that children who communicate regularly with their parents about their daily activities are 67 percent less likely to be involved in substance abuse than children who have little or no communication.
