MORRISTOWN, NJ - The 7 th Annual Action for Distraction 5K was held at Loantaka Brook Reservation took place on Saturday May 4. A timed 5K took place at 9 am and a fun Star Wars themed 5K took place at 11 am,
Over $150,000.00 was raised for the Goryeb Children’s Hospital. These funds will be used to provide such activities as art and music therapy for children while they are being treated for cancer.
In the men’s category, Joe Larramendia (of Somerville), Stephen Murray (of Florham Park), and Ryan Scally (of Randolph) won first, second, and third place with winning times of 19:13.18, 19:13.49, and 19:14.12 respectively. With winning times of 18:21.93, 19:23.70, and 23:08.92, Elena Rozhko (of Morristown), Jessica Byrnes (of Morristown), and Faith Hurtado (Succasunna) were the first, second, and third winners for the women’s category.
Opening remarks were made by this year’s Face of the Race Stephen Murray. A Morristown High School Senior, Stephen runs Cross Country, Winter Track, and Spring Track. Stephen, who is diagnosed with Autism. He thanked his teachers, friends, and family for all their support. To those in attendance, Stephen provided the following words of encouragement “play to your strengths and you’ll be a successful person.”
The Action for Distraction 5K was founded by Zach Rice following treatment for a septic hip infection at age 10. A sister race known as the Skeleton Train Run will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19 th for bone health awareness and research.
