SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The deadline to apply for the state’s COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance Program (CVERAP) has been extended with all pre-applications now due to the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs (NJSDCA) by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 17. The program will provide financial assistance to eligible low- and moderate-income residents who have had a substantial reduction in income or who became unemployed as a result of the pandemic.

“The old adage is that the two most important things are a roof over your head and food on the table and, during these challenging times, people are having a difficult time doing both of those,” said Senator Patrick J. Diegnan, Jr. of South Plainfield. “Anything we as a state, as a society, can do to help, we should do it. This is obviously a very valuable and necessary program.”

According to the state’s website (, applicants may be eligible for a maximum of up to six months of emergency rental assistance with assistance capped at the NJSDCA's fair market rent standard or the total of the rent, whichever is less. The program will begin paying rental assistance in September and qualifying households are expected to pay 30 percent of their income toward the rent. At the three-month mark, the household budget will be reviewed to determine if assistance is still needed.
