MORRISTOWN, NJ - For the 2nd consecutive year, Morristown High School is participating in the New York Jets “Upstander of the Week” Program. In order to be chosen, students must encourage positive dialogue among their peers and work to ensure that all students are respected and valued as members of the MHS community,
This week, Julia Bozza was chosen for Upstander of the Week. Bozza, according to teacher Mr. Rooney, “wrote a piece for an amazing anthology entitled, ‘You Do You’ where she talks about finding her own strength and learning that you don’t have to go along with the crowd to survive.” In class, she was described as “one of the kindest students” in the sense that she is “quick to help others in a group review for a test, encourage someone who is feeling down,” and that she “treats both faculty and students with respect.” She was also described as a “terrific role model for younger students” and “enjoys tutoring them in academics and dance.”
For each of 16 weeks during the 2018 NFL season, staff members will nominate students who demonstrate upstanding qualities of character similar to the Heart of the Colonial (i.e. kind, hard-working, responsible, honest, and respectful). One student will be selected each week and he/she will be honored with a special T-shirt, parent bumper sticker, 3 tickets to a home NY Jets game, and a parking pass.
"This program affords us the opportunity to highlight the positive contributions so many of our students make to our school and to our community", said Morristown High School Principal Mark Manning. "I want to extend my appreciation to the Jets organization for their willingness to partner with us to recognize some of our amazing students at MHS".
Schools who fully participate in the program may receive a visit by New York Jets players. Last year, Morristown High School was a finalist during the 2017 season
Through the outreach program, the New York Jets have directly reached 9,000 students through school visits, distributed over 1,250 Educator Toolkits with the potential to impact more than 430,000 students, and they have donated more than $200,000 to Stomp Out Bullying during their Anti-Bullying Awareness Gamedays at Met Life Stadium.
