MORRISTOWN, NJ -  For the 3rd consecutive year, Morristown High School is participating in the New York Jets “Upstander of the Week” Program.  In order to be chosen, students must encourage positive dialogue among their peers and work to ensure that all students are respected and valued as members of the MHS community,

This week, Michael O'Kane was selected as the NY Jets Upstander of the Week.

According to history teacher, Mr. Rooney, Michael is a student that “stands out for helping others.”  He explained, “Whether I am trying to get the attention of the class or a classmate needs help, Michael is incredibly kind and respectful.  He stands up for doing what’s right and is the ultimate gentleman.” He also explained that he is “quick to work with anyone needing a partner and quick to notice kids that need a friend.”  He further stated, “He sets the tone for a positive class environment by being the first to volunteer answers, help struggling students, and always wears a smile.” He was described as “having a super powerful presence” in the room and in his spare time, volunteers to help build homes through his church.

For each of 16 weeks during the 2018 NFL season, staff members will nominate students who demonstrate upstanding qualities of character similar to the Heart of the Colonial (i.e. kind, hard-working, responsible, honest, and respectful). One student will be selected each week, and he/she will be honored with a special T-shirt, and 2 tickets to a home NY Jets game.

"This program affords us the opportunity to highlight the positive contributions so many of our students make to our school and to our community", said Morristown High School Principal Mark Manning.  "I want to extend my appreciation to the Jets organization for their willingness to partner with us to recognize some of our amazing students at MHS".

Full participation in the program may lead to a School Recognition Visit by New York Jets players. Morristown High School was a finalist in 2017 and 2018 and school officials are hoping that 2019 will be their year.

“I am honored to implement this tremendous program and to recognize students who demonstrate positive behavior", said Mele.  "The New York Jets do a great deal for our community. They really do care!”
