MORRISTOWN, NJ - The Juneteenth Celebration is an event held  to commemorate freedom for all people. The event, held on the Morristown Green marks the end of slavery with a Freedom Walk, a civil war re-enactment, a historical bar crawl, and a conversation on race. There was a gathering on the green where music, readings and songs inspired by the African American experience were shared.

Candace Kelley, member of the Sankofa of Morris, explained the importance of Juneteenth.

“Juneteenth is a celebration of the freedom of slaves. 2019 is a time to be unified. There are so many positive things going on in society. Juneteenth is also a time to teach people about the freeing of slaves but a time to liberate yourself as well. It’s also a time to empower small businesses to succeed,” she said.
