MORRISTOWN – The Morristown High School girls soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with in-conference foe Sparta on Thursday at Greystone-Central Park in Morris Plains.

The Colonials had a good result against a Sparta team that had only surrendered two goals coming into the matchup, and had a 11-2 goal advantage overall in three games. Sparta scored in the first half when Kate Mazella capitalized on a penalty kick. Morristown turned it up a notch in the second half and controlled possession. The Colonials were generating a ton of chances – they just weren’t finding the back of the net.

Morristown had a shot go off the post about midway through the second half. The Colonials were trying to figure out Sparta goalie Taige Kellenberger, and to their credit, they kept firing away. Morristown eventually got its golden opportunity. On a cross, Kellenberger collided with Morgan O'Neill in the box. That allowed for Katie McGuinness to bury a penalty kick with under five minutes to play to tie the game.

There was back-and-forth action the rest of the way but both teams had to settle for the draw after 100 minutes of play.

“I was really happy with the way we played,” said Morristown head coach Scott Hansen. “We’re really putting our passing game together. The girls are moving off the ball. We were winning the first ball, winning the second ball. This is everything we’ve been working towards.”

After a tough start to the season with a 5-0 loss to Randolph in the season opener, Morristown is 1-1-2 since. Hansen is looking to get to a consistent level.

“We’ve gotten over the rough start to the season and now we’re really clicking,” Hansen said. “If we can continue to build we’re going to keep doing well.” The Colonials will see Sparta once again on Oct. 3.

“We know Sparta from last year,” Hansen said. “They’re one of the toughest opponents in our conference. We knew coming in this would be a measure of how the conference is
going to shake out this season. I can’t wait for the second game. (Sparta’s) coach (Daniel Trappe) is a goalie trainer. He knows how to get his goalies ready for games. Their
defense did a fantastic job.”
