MORRISTOWN, NJ – Survive and advance – that’s the name of the game at this point of the season.
The fourth-seeded Morristown High School baseball team did just that, edging 12th- seeded Clifton, 1-0, in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 tournament quarter- finals on Friday, May 24.
The Colonials will meet top-seeded Bloomfield in the sectional semifinals. The win over Clifton was the team’s fourth straight. Morristown (14-7) scored the lone run in the fifth inning, as Pat Montfort had an RBI to score Andrew Flores. Sam Slackman, Tate Ballestero and Flores all went 2-for-3 for Morristown. The Colonials had three errors to Clifton’s one.
Clifton’s Josh Miller went 3-for-4 on the day. Clifton pitcher Manny Gonzalez struck out five.
For Morristown, Matt Hallberg started and went five innings before Flores and Montfort closed things out in relief efforts.
The Colonials will now look to knock off the top seed in the section, Bloomfield. The bracket has the top four seeds remaining, with Bloomfield, second-seeded Ridgewood,
third-seeded Montclair and fourth-seeded Morristown. Bloomfield is 19-8 on the season and has defeated Bergen Tech and Mount Olive in the state tournament thus far.
