MORRISTOWN, NJ- Senior night for the Morristown Colonials was certainly a memory, although the Colonials fell on the wrong-side of a 67-61 4-OT affair with Pope John. Senior, Ray Mundrick delivered a 16-point 13 rebound double-double and what everyone at Morristown High School thought was the game-winner with 22 seconds remaining in regulation.
“Our seniors played their hearts out tonight,” said head coach Mike Serra. “I’m very proud of the way we played and fought, and unfortunately, someone had to lose.”
Mike Atta was fouled with seconds remaining, hitting 1-2 at the line, forcing the first overtime. Daven Santos scored his only 3 points at the buzzer in 2OT, after Pope John rushed down the court after D’Shon Scott hit both of his free throws with only 6 seconds left. Nurell Miranda finished with 16 points for Pope John and delivered the dagger in the final overtime.
Morristown trailed from the start, while Pope John built a 13-0 advantage and a 19-5 edge after the first.
The Colonials took their first lead with 3:08 remaining after Justin Barrett scored 9 of his 13 in the 4 th . Kahleb Harris, Jack Harris, Luke Marum, Matt Nardollilo along with Scott got the start on Senior Night. Morristown now sits at 5-13 on the season, with the state tournament looming.
“This one will sting for a little, but we have more basketball left this season and we are going to try to make the most of it,” said Serra.
