MORRISTOWN, NJ- The Morristown Colonials advanced to the Morris County Tournament Quarterfinals on Sunday morning with a 3-1 win over Pequannock. With the victory, the Colonials avenged 2-straight County tournament exits by the hands of the Panthers. Morristown, the 4th seed, await the winner of  5th seeded Boonton and 12th seed Morris Knolls.

The home side were creating all the chances early on, but had nothing to show for it. Jordan Viotto rang the outside of the goalpost in the opening minutes.

The first score came against the run of play on a Morristown turnover in their own end, which allowed Joey Carbone time and space. He made the most of Pequannock’s golden opportunity, burying it in the bottom corner, leaving Jonathan Nicholson no chance.

Morristown didn’t hold their heads down at all, as Viotto received a gorgeous ball from Connor Tierney putting him 1 on 1 with the keeper. He controlled it beautifully and equalized the match with an incredible chip.

“The first half wasn’t our strongest, but getting it back before halftime was huge for us,” said coach Diego Salas. “We turned it up a lot in the 2nd half.”

The second half began the same way the game did, with Morristown as the aggressor. 15 minutes after the break, Lazlo Stauss was in the right place at the right time to bang home the loose ball. The crowd erupted as the Colonials got their well deserved lead.

Morristown put the nail in the coffin just a few moments later, with a genius play by Tierney and Viotto. A pequannock corner kick led to a Morristown counter attack with the ball going out of play around midfield. Tierney, while sprinting down the field, yelled at Viotto for the quick throw, and Tierney was off to the races. After the composure to cut back and wait out the defender, he slotted the ball by the keeper, putting the Colonials up 3-1.

“That was a super heads up play by Tierney and Jordan,” said coach Salas. “The cutback by Tierney, that was pretty!”

These surging Colonials have now won 5-straight games and sit at 7-2-1 on the year. The likes of Tierney and Viotto make this a dangerous bunch to face down the stretch.
