MORRISTOWN, NJ- Sunday’s Morris County Tournament Quarterfinal 4/5 matchup saw the 4 th seeded Morristown Colonials advance with a 3-1 victory over 5 th seed Boonton. Morristown’s dominant 1 st half propelled the home side to an intriguing semifinal against unbeaten Delbarton.
“From starting 0-6 a year ago, sitting up looking at a semifinal and a 9-3 record, it’s truly remarkable,” said coach Diego Salas.”
The Colonials came out firing in the 1 st half, and were rewarded 13 minutes in, thanks to a bullet off the foot of Diego Izaguirre for a 1-0 lead.
“Their keeper made some excellent saves early on, really keeping them in it,” said coach Salas. “Our guys just found a way, like they’ve been doing all season.”
Morristown kept their foot on the gas, and Henry Acosta pressured the Boonton defender into a turnover and played in Connor Tierney for a 2-0 advantage 20 minutes later. Connor Manion would add a Morristown 3 rd early in the 2 nd half, heading home a pin-point Jordan Viotto cross.
Boonton would get on the board with 11 minutes remaining.
Morristown’s defense saw out the remaining minutes and held on to book a place in the semifinals next weekend. The Colonials will look to avenge a 2-1 defeat to the Green Wave earlier this season.
“I’m excited to see how much we’ve grown,” said coach Salas. “We are hoping for another great game, but this time with a different outcome.”
Quick turnaround for the boys, with a home game tomorrow against Morris Hills, looking to make it 3- straight.
