MONTCLAIR, NJ- In the North 1 Group 4 state tournament quarterfinal, No. 2 seed Montclair eliminated the No. 7 seed Colonials 2-1, securing a spot in the semifinals, while also ending Morristown’s season.

Montclair will face off with Livingston in the semi’s next week.

The game was scoreless midway thru the first half when Chloe Nemes provided the opening goal for Montclair giving the home side the lead. Just moments later, Jillian O’Toole drilled a shot from outside the box giving MacKenzie Fitzgerald no chance for a 2-0 lead.

“In the middle of the first half we lost our marks in midfield, and they have a superb midfield,” said coach Scott Hansen. “But I am proud of the way my team came in here against a great Montclair team and fought them hard.”

The Colonials would have a response right before halftime when Morgan O’Neill headed one home to cut the deficit to 1 at the half. The goal brought O’Neill’s season total to a team-high 12, after scoring 10 last year during her sophomore year.

“After going down 2-0, our girls didn’t stop fighting, and we fought back and got our goal,” said coach Hansen. “We pushed, and we pushed but we came up short. I am extremely proud of this team.”

Morristown fought hard in the second half, but just couldn’t generate enough going forward to constantly pressure Montclair’s goal.

The loss brings Morristown’s final record to 10-8-1, with a lot to look forward to next year and beyond.

“Last year we thought when we said goodbye to all those seniors, how do we rebuild with these young kids and put together quite a team,” said coach Hansen.” We have a nice bunch of sophomores and juniors and we are looking to reload; not rebuild.”
