MORRISTOWN, NJ- Tuesday’s highly anticipated matchup with Elizabeth (10-0-2) didn’t go as Morristown (7-3-1) as hoped, as the 6 th ranked team in New Jersey took it to the Colonials 4-0. Morristown’s top 2 goal-scorers Jordan Viotto and Henry Acosta did not play as the Colonials failed to muster any offense to threaten the unbeaten.

“Elizabeth is 6 th in the state for a reason,” said coach Diego Salas. “Quick footwork, great speed and good control of the ball, definitely the best team we’ve played all season.”
The opening 15 minutes of the match was dominated in possession by Elizabeth, but the best chance came from Connor Tierney, who was denied by the crossbar.

Just moments later, Jacoby Calvo tapped home a rebound to put the visitors up 1-0. Calvo and Elizabeth weren’t finished as just 5 minutes later he added a 2 nd , dribbling thru multiple Colonial defenders en route to a 2-0 Elizabeth lead.

The crushing blow came just minutes before halftime when Rafeal Ortega rose up at the backpost to head home the 3 rd Elizabeth goal. Coach Salas emptied his bench in the 2 nd half, and his team played well and fought hard down 3-0. Eventually, Matthew Giraldo found himself in all alone, beating the keeper for a 4 th .

“The second half I was very happy with our attitude and intensity,” said Salas. “We started playing more physical and we didn’t back down. Unfortunately, you can’t just wake up in the 2nd half and expect to beat a good team.”

Morristown’s stiffest challenge was too much on this day, but the Colonials have seen better days and will see better days.

Health will be important as Morristown has two big games this week. Thursday against Chatham, looking to avenge their early season loss, and Sunday in the county quarterfinals against Boonton.
