JERSEY CITY, NJ - A new traffic bridge that connects downtown Jersey City with Liberty State Park is under construction. The bridge, a project by Jersey City and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, will connect Jersey Avenue to Phillip Street and moderate traffic that uses downtown streets as a shortcut to get to the waterfront, the Holland Tunnel, and Hoboken.

Officials say it will create a more direct route through downtown and increase safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Currently, traffic using the park comes to a dead end where Jersey Avenue might otherwise have come out at Audrey Zapp Drive. Traffic must go through a section of Bergen Lafayette along Johnston Avenue to Pacific Street to reach Grand Street.

The $13 million project, which is being funded by the Turnpike and the city, will also modify the existing intersection of Grand and Pacific to reduce turn lanes and construct new sidewalks and additional bike lanes. The two lanes that currently turn onto Grand from Pacific will be reduced to one.
