WESTFIELD, NJ — Several residents have reported seeing a black bear in Mindowaskin Park Friday evening. The bear was said to have climbed up a tree, and has since climbed back down and moved on.

“It was in the area,” Westfield Police Chief David Wayman said Saturday. “It is unknown where it is now.”

The bear may be the same animal seen earlier in the week in Fanwood and Scotch Plains. Scotch Plains police said Thursday that the black bear sighted by Scotch Plains-Fanwood high school was last seen in the area of Mountain Avenue heading toward Westfield.

Wayman advised people to stay away from the bear call police if they spotted it.
