Chapel Hill Academy Recognized For Cutting Edge Arts Program

Chapel Hill Academy leaders Diane Somers and Thomas Celli, winners of the 2017 NAPSEC Innovations in Special Education Award.

Lincoln Park, NJ - Chapel Hill Academy, a private school serving students with learning, social, emotional and behavioral disabilities, has been awarded the 2016 Award for Leadership & Innovation by the National Association of Private Special Education Centers (NAPSEC).

Educators at Chapel Hill Academy were honored for their “Arts for the 21st Century” music program which helps students develop learning skills, overcome stressors, and explore their creativity by writing, organizing, and arranging their own music. As a result of the program, many students have expressed a stronger interest in mathematics and how it relates to the world around them.

Research shows that music and math are related to brain development from very early in life. Elements in music such as steady beat, rhythm, melody, and tempo possess inherent mathematical principles of spatial properties, sequencing, counting, patterning, and one-to-one correspondence.

“We strive to be on the cutting edge of creative and technological advances to prepare our students to become professionals in the 21st century. Through the study of music, our students have gained skills in advanced mathematical concepts,” said Diane Somers, Director of Chapel Hill Academy. “We are deeply honored to have been selected for this recognition,” she concluded.

The innovative arts program was also selected for state honors last spring at the 16th annual ‘Innovations in Special Education’ ceremony, held in Princeton and hosted by New Jersey School Boards Association and ASAH.

You Want a Check for How Much!

My first admissions gig was working for a small liberal arts college with a pretty hefty price tag.  Picture me at a college fair: name tag in place, pile of brochures ready to go.  An eager family would walk up and we’d start a conversation.  One of the first questions I’d get from parents was about cost and the moment that $50,000-plus figure left my mouth I ...
