Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains will hold Shabbat services that cater to children in specific age groups on designated Friday evenings and Saturday mornings throughout the year.

Tot Shabbat is designed for young children, ages 0 – 5 years old, along with their families. Kids Kehilla caters to children in second through fifth grade. Both Tot Shabbat and Kids Kehilla are free and open to the community.

Tot Shabbat is an interactive service that celebrates the Jewish Sabbath through song, prayer and storytelling. Each month, Congregation Beth Israel will offer one Tot Shabbat service on a Friday evening as well as one Tot Shabbat service on a Saturday morning. On Friday evenings, Tot Shabbat services will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by matzah ball soup and a nosh for the children. On Saturday mornings, Tot Shabbat services will begin at 10:45 a.m.

Kids Kehillah is a kid-friendly Shabbat service and experience for elementary school children that meets monthly on Saturday mornings from 10:15-11:15. Parents and older children are welcome to attend regular Shabbat morning services conducted concurrently in the synagogue’s main sanctuary, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Tot Shabbat and Kids Kehillah are scheduled for the same Saturday mornings during the year so that when families with children of various ages come to synagogue, there’s a service for everyone.   At the conclusion of all three Saturday morning services, children and adults are invited to enjoy a complimentary kiddush lunch together in the synagogue’s social hall.

“At CBI, we want to offer a meaningful Shabbat experience for all,” said Lev Metz, Director of Congregational Learning and Engagement at Congregation Beth Israel. “For many young families, that means having age-appropriate programming followed by kid and adult-friendly food. Our regular Tot Shabbat and Kids Kehillah services are a great opportunity to feel connected with other local Jewish families as well as our tradition.”
