Congregation Beth Israel Holds Open House for Prospective Members

Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains will hold an open house for prospective members on Sunday, May 21, from 10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Prospective congregants will have the opportunity to tour the synagogue and its Religious School and to meet Congregation Beth Israel’s leadership.  The open house will take place during the Religious School’s end-of-year celebration. Sponsored by the synagogue’s Men’s Club, the event is free to the community.

The end-of-year party will feature a BBQ, refreshments and games for children of all ages.  Attendees will also have the opportunity to help support charities by participating in craft and sports activities at “Mitzvah Booths” run by Religious School students in grades six and seven.

“This is a wonderful way to end the school year,” said Gail Beckman Buchbinder, Education Director of Congregation Beth Israel.  “It’s also a great opportunity for us to welcome prospective members and have them meet the children, parents, teachers and volunteers that make up our close-knit synagogue family.”

Congregation Beth Israel has been recognized as an ABLE Awarded Congregation by the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest for its commitment to inclusion and accommodation for all its members. Its Religious School was one of the first three congregations in North America to be designated as a Framework for Excellence School by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, educating students from kindergarten through tenth grade through experiential grade-specific programs that encompass the family in its curriculum.

Congregation Beth Israel does not require synagogue membership for children to attend its Religious School for programs through second grade.  However, families with children below third grade now have the option of joining the synagogue at a reduced rate and enjoying full benefits of synagogue membership, including High Holiday tickets.  Religious School for grades 3-7 meets two days per week, on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Congregation Beth Israel is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue, serving the religious, cultural, educational and social needs of congregants from Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Westfield and surrounding towns. It has an active Sisterhood, Men’s Club and youth group, plus a wide array of programs, ranging from adult education courses to social action opportunities.

“All of us at CBI are proud of our designation as an ABLE awarded congregation and we are committed to inclusion. If you or your child have a challenge that makes Religious School and/or synagogue participation difficult, please contact us so that we can endeavor to make the necessary accommodations," said Ms. Buchbinder.

Colleen Mahr Has Paid Her Dues, Earned Peoples’ Trust, and Left a Track Record of Success

February 20, 2018

Dear Editor:

As a 26-year-old Scotch Plains resident who cares more about the well-being of our town than about local politics, I am extremely disappointed that the Scotch Plains Democratic Committee leadership has decided to abandon Colleen Mahr in her run for Chair of the Union County Democratic Committee.

Mahr, who as Mayor of Fanwood for 15 years has worked closely with Scotch Plains ...
