MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ - On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m., girls in grades six, seven, and eight at Deerfield School participate in Girls on the Run, Heart & SoleGirls on the Run, Heart & Sole is a national program that creates a positive place for middle school girls to learn about themselves, explore new ideas, develop life skills, and participate in the sport of running.

The Heart & Sole curriculum, according to Coach and Fifth Grade teacher Hillary Whitacre, is full of themes middle school aged girls can relate to, such as decision making, boundary setting, developing a support system, asking for and providing help, body image, nutrition, and more.

Through various activities, games, conversations, and running, the girls connect with one another and their coaches, creating strong bonds and lasting friendships. At the end of the ten week season, all girls participate in the Girls on the Run 5k, which is a celebration of all the girls have achieved throughout the season.
