BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Gov. Livingston 2018 gradate Nicholas Kwan was the Berkeley Heights recipient of the Suburban Chamber of Commerce Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 for his outstanding community service. Dr. Patrick Smith of Smith Chiropractic and the Vice Chairman of the Suburban Chamber of Commerce presented the scholarship to Kwan at an awards ceremony at Gov. Livingston High School last month.
The $1,500 scholarship was made possible by the Suburban Chamber of Commerce members who represent local business in Berkeley Heights, New Providence, and Summit and was funded for the eighth straight year by a grant by The Smith Chiropractic Foundation on behalf of the 2017 Berkeley Heights 5K Charity Road Race & Fitness Walk which is held each September at Memorial Field.
Dr. Smith said that the candidates were all excellent and the committee used outstanding community service as the deciding factor. "We feel that getting involved and giving back to the community where we work, live, or go to school, is most important, and this year’s recipient truly excelled in this area," he said.
Kwan's impressive accolades include: Scout Scholar Athlete; Squad Leader varsity fencing (top 16 saber 2017); three time National Honor Society; three time Mu Alpha Theta (National Mathematics Honor Society); four years High Honor Roll; Treasurer Red Cross club; Tutor in History, Science, Math, English and Spanish; Science Olympiad; Interact Club; Junior Statesmen of America; 8 years Boy Scouts of America attaining the rank of Junior Scoutmaster with over 250 hours of community service including - Relay for Life, Rubbery Ducky Fest, Rotary Pancake Breakfasts, Back to School nights and assisting other scouts' Eagle Projects; Faith Lutheran Peer Leadership with countless hours at St. John’s Soup kitchen in Newark preparing and serving meal to those in need, working the hospitality programs sheltering and feeding homeless, food drives, and tutoring children at risk in Newark.
"Clearly Nicholas is someone who has excelled in school and extracurricular activities, but still found time to give back to the community and beyond with passion," said Dr. Smith.
Kwan will be attending Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH in the fall to continue his studies in Engineering.
