METUCHEN, NJ - Governor Livingston softball pulled off a 11-9 upset of Metuchen in the first round of central group 2 tournament on Wednesday night. GL’s offense exploded for 15 hits, with five batters recording multi hit games.
The Highlanders began the game hot, knocking in four early runs in the top of the first inning to give senior ace Juliann Lopes an early cushion. Metuchen brought the lead down to three in the bottom of the frame, but GL added to its lead, scoring two in the second and three in the third.
After Metuchen managed to bring the Highlander lead to 6 with a two run third inning, GL came right back to put up two more runs in the top of the fourth.
The higher seeded Bulldogs would not go down without a fight, as they managed to get to Lopes in the fifth and sixth, bringing GL’s lead down to five. GL was held scoreless in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, giving Metuchen a chance to tie or win the game in the bottom half of the seventh. Despite knocking in three runs off Lopes, who finished the game with five punchouts and seven earned runs allowed, the senior righty was able to shut the door to complete the upset.
GL’s offense was led by senior Jess Schmidt, who went 3-5 with 3 RBI’s and three extra base hits, and junior Evan Pallitta, who tallied three hits in four at bats with three runs batted in. Juniors Erica Kulback and Gabrielle Lombardi and freshman Olivia Magliacano each tallied two hits, and Lopes and senior Jane Morabito drove in a runner apiece.
The 8-11 Highlanders advance to the second round in the state tournament, where they will face off with an opponent to be determined. Before that matchup, the team has a busy week, playing two conference opponents in Westfield and Roselle Park, in addition to a matchup with Summit.
